Many of us carry a hazy picture of life after we exit a business or a career. It feels far off, something we’ll deal with "someday". Maybe there’s a vague idea: “I’ll play more golf,” or “I’ll travel more,” but when the time comes, that imagined future turns into a lived reality, and that touches more than your money.
We like to involve the family early when we talk about what comes next. The more voices at the table, the more grounded the plan becomes.
What Happens When the Career Isn’t There
When you exit the workforce, it can substantially change the routines and rhythms you’re used to. It’s sweet, but it can also feel like the classic 3-legged race from the county fair. Two separate people need to re-learn how to dream, plan, and decide together.
When we’re discussing what life will look like after an exit, we like to ask couples:
What will we do together?
What will we do separately?
This also extends to kids and grandkids. Many of our clients have the desire to be present and involved in the generations of their family. Again, something worth discussing ahead of making any big retirement plans.
More Than Just Free Time
Once we get past the idea of “we’ll have more time,” we start talking about the things that have lived on your bucket list–those activities you’ve always wanted to do.
And then we ask:
What would those look like in real life?
What would they cost in money and time?
What would your health need to look like to sustain them?
How realistic are they, and what would it take to make them happen?
This process helps make those dreams livable and not just aspirational. The life you want after the business will shape the plan we create before the exit, and the clearer your picture, the more accurate your plan can be.
Final Thoughts
The more time we spend preparing for what life looks like after an exit, the better the transition tends to be. You don’t have to script the whole chapter, but you do want a clear direction.
If you're beginning to think about what’s next, let’s talk about it now, together and in detail. We’re here to help you design a life that fits who you are and what matters most to you.
